This is a new work, developed from a program previously acclaimed in presentations in Sydney (Tap Gallery) 2014, and the Illawarra (2012), and internationally in Romania and Bulgaria in 2014 and 2015. “Paradise Now” is a separate, produced 70 minute performance (including short interval) with solo performer.
The poetry comes from up to 15 sources, from modern and ancient poetry. Its narrative follows the path and stages of human evolution or becoming, from pre human struggle to full self-conscious identity, to distinct perspective of today.
This work consciously explores a full multiform style in order to capture and attest to its subject matter. A spectrum of expression or performance styles – song, dance, poetry, recorded voice, acting, projected image and music – are mediated without any one element dominating. The style works through a “synaesthesia” of forms that would have helped produce first human wonder at natural and human beauty.
"As my quite extensive Tap Gallery theatre experiences goes, the hybrid, experimental piece ranks as one of the most daring, engrossing productions ... a mesmerising, esoteric one hour performance charting the human journey, in particular the female journey, from the primordial right up to some imaginings of what the future may hold."
“A Divine Comedy … a lyrical gem …A theatrical immersion into creative movement, evocative music, a delectable visual feast …Actor Shabnam Tavakol bespells the audience by the poetry she recites.” (Sydney Arts Guide 2014, 2020)
Geoffrey Sykes – over 35 professional theatre productions in Australia and internationally, including LaMama Melbourne, Holden Street Adelaide, Riverside Sydney, and commissions for major galleries including the NSW Art Gallery. Video producer with several broadcast credits.
